1. I'll respond with something random about you
You are at home with ghosts. They are not lost, with you.
2. I'll challenge you to try something
When you are next in a city with a fine park, you could get a pistachio ice-cream with sprinkles and ride the carousel. Pedal boats would be another option, with the ice cream. When you are feeling better, of course.
3. I'll pick a color that I associate with you
Scarlet. it is vibrant and goes so well with your colouring.
4. I'll tell you something I like about you
Sometimes when you are very happy and surprised, your whole self crinkles up in a smile. It is very fetching.
5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you
It was Thanksgiving, a year ago now, and I came to visit you with gabriel for your party. You were so warm and hugged me and I melted.
6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of
A labrador - the tawny kind. That is a compliment.
7. I'll ask you something I've always wanted to ask you
Forgive me?

And it surely was a good turn.

1. I'll respond with something random about you
When encountering things or perhaps ideas that others find disturbing, you face them and live them without it occurring you to flinch or shy.
2. I'll challenge you to try something
Learn to ride, if you have not already done so. We have not discussed it, but I believe you would enjoy it.
3. I'll pick a color that I associate with you
When the sky turn turquoise at twilight, the colour I associate with you is the one of the deepest blue before it becomes indistinguishable from the black.
4. I'll tell you something I like about you
You are an original thinker and an excellent conversationalist. The combination is stellar. That is not the only thing about you that I like,. It is only one.
5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you
Somehow I see you looking thoughtfully into a drink before you respond to something I have said, as I look into my drink in turn considering your words. Very companionable.
6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of
Strangely this was the most difficult question. Perhaps a manta ray.
7. I'll ask you something I've always wanted to ask you
It is not so much that I have hesitated to ask you, but that the question has not arisen. What darkness made you profound?

2. "You'll have to forgive my ignorance here, by learn to ride, do we mean cards? That turn of phrase seems to have escaped me."

7. "Not a simple question you asked and therefore, not simple to answer." Damien ponders for a moment. Sifting through the most significant moments in his life. He answers when he feels like he has a fairly solid responce.

"It would be easy to say, when Lily dumped me. That was a very profound moment for me. I got asked once, why Lily meant so much to me? When I thought about it, the best answer I could come up with was that she represented a lot of the joy and simplicity of childhood. It was a dark moment for me, when I finally realized it was over. Almost a symbolic death of innocence, in its own way."

"A lot of it could be traced back to when my father and mother started having marital problems. I was ten or eleven when started to notice it. Mom was always running from her own demons, but she was starting to run more and farther away. Knowing that I didn't have that steady foundation at home made me more self reliant, made me realize that many things in life are fragile. That there isn't always going to be someone there to catch you when you fall."

"I think really, more then anything ... The moment that truly made me acutely aware of darkness and shaped my way of thinking profoundly after that ... was the night I touched my fathers warden sword. He'd come home bloodied (not the unusual blood of a creature, but the scarlet of a mans blood). Left the sword out and I just felt compelled to touch it. Like most children, when you feel that compulsion you act on it, regardless of what you've been told not to."

"I've never told anyone before, but I got a vision of what my father had done with that sword earlier that night. He'd slain a warlock in a fit of rage. The other wizard was a criminal and he'd been sacrificing children he'd kidnapped to dark gods for power. I vividly remember seeing the little bodies, John. There were thirteen of them. Only a bit older then I was at the time."

"I also absorbed some sort of hex or magical sickness from the sword, but the effects were eventually reversed. That was my unfriendly introduction into the world of magic as you can imagine, the impact was harsh."

2. I meant that you could learn to ride a horse. I can see you on horseback - I suspect you would naturally do well at it.

3. When you touched profundity and the world outside the close one you had known, it seems. When things transformed to show you pain and the true nature of heroism. You are a thoughtful man. You know yourself, and I am proud to know you.

Hickey! Welcome!

1. I'll respond with something random about you
You have such a warm, open-handed welcoming air about you, but you are so clearly human. It is touching.
2. I'll challenge you to try something
This sounds like the question from which you would expect the most. I should like you to come caroling with me for Christmas.
3. I'll pick a color that I associate with you
Green. A green related to olive, but an olive green more pure than the military colour, but by no means bright or garish.
4. I'll tell you something I like about you
You are inspiring. I have little in the way of pipe dreams, but I watch you with others and your kindness and
5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you
Asking. You ask gently but incisively and muse. I wonder if I subconsciously emulate you. What I see when I think of you is a smile and eyes with understanding, but lonely nonetheless.
6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of
a polar bear
7. I'll ask you something I've always wanted to ask you
Hickey, I know I can ask you anything. How would it be for you to love someone - someone new - with your life standing as it does?

Theodore 'Hickey' Hickman: Just like that
Heh. Hell, I've never been caroling in my life, but y'know, it might be worth a try. I'm not big on the idea of it--not that I mind singing; maybe it's the snow, or just the part about singing a tune to people without selling 'em anything, ahah--but I'm not a man to back down from a challenge. Could be fun.

Think I actually have a suit that color, somewhere. Long as I'm remembering correctly, and I don't know why I wouldn't be, it's one of the suits Evelyn picked out for me. Always did like that one.

Lonely. It's interesting that you say that, Doc... Real interesting.

As for your question, can't say that I've got a good answer for that. I mean, I'm not half-sure where it is standing right now, and I couldn't love anyone else, not after what Evelyn and I had. Couldn't love anyone else when she was alive, and even now... Hell. What's dead is dead, and I know that; guess I'm just a little slow leaving it, and maybe I won't forget. She was a hell of a woman, and it just wouldn't feel right.

I guess that's what it'd be, then. If somehow--and I'm not saying it's likely to happen, or even that it's going to happen at all, but speaking strictly hypothetically--I fell for anyone else, I'd feel guilty as hell about the whole thing. Wouldn't be able to forget what I'd promised Evelyn and what she meant to me, no matter how much I might, ah, love this other woman.

Tarts, on the other hand, are a different story altogether, heh.

John smiles. We will go caroling then? A little later - next month, perhaps? I have never been either.

Perhaps, Hickey, it was too soon to ask that question. Someday I will ask you another - similar but subtly different. Tarts. I have surely known them, but that is not love. Greater love hath no man than that he lay down his life for his friend.

Theodore 'Hickey' Hickman: Vague gesture
I didn't mean anything about the tarts; not seriously. I was just fooling around--I do too much of that sometimes, I'll admit--didn't mean a thing by it, no Sir. They never were anything more than a bit of fun, or a distraction, or something... Something else, anyway.

Okay, all right, I'm just talking now, and I don't know that I'm helping my case any. I'll be looking forward to the caroling, Doc; should be a hell of a time.

John Henry Holliday, DDS: gabriel medal
Gabriel. Beloved.

1. I'll respond with something random about you
I look at you lying there, the lines that weariness and loss have etched beneath your eyes, and I see you smiling at me, grinning at some small sensual delight, and I see your serious gentleness when you talk with me of eternal truths, and I see you as fire and strength, revealed but untouchable, and I see you as rabbits, soft and trusting, just to please me. I love you. Those are a number of random things. There is so much it is truly random.
2. I'll challenge you to try something
Draw a picture with me, with pastels, or crayons. Of Simon.
3. I'll pick a color that I associate with you
soft charcoal. soft. when you were rabbits your blackness glistened rich and reflective, but black from your fire, smudged by a finger, with pressure in your anger, slowly in your gentleness.
4. I'll tell you something I like about you
I like the fact that you have a belly button and a hollow above your lip - those artistic touches from your creation delight me.
5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you
I have such a wealth of memories, clear and perfect. The first time, in this age, I met you was at the Tammy awards. I rose to greet you and we spent our first time, companionable and comfortable with small discussions of hints of depth, shades of subtlety, recognition even. It was warm. I knew you in other ways in other guise since... oh, before I was born. But that was the first time we met in that way.
6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of
A tiger. Relaxing and lolling, licking cream from your whiskers, smiling luxuriously, allowing himself to be tickled, but who could roll to power, all claws and teeth in a second, should it be warranted
7. I'll ask you something I've always wanted to ask you
I ask you the tiniest things if they come to mind that they might not trouble us, but... Shall we go back to Marin House, Gabriel? The s'mores were delicious and the fire was beautiful, but I think I should like to return.

1. I'll respond with something random about you
You do not strike me as a random person, but rather an effect and a cause - a man with a place in the web of causality.

2. I'll challenge you to try something
Sometime, when you are in the proper place, walk by yourself into the woods, where the ground is mossy but not wet, beside a clear stream, and lie down, relaxing your back, and listen to the stream and dream. Bring a book of tough poetry.

3. I'll pick a color that I associate with you
despite my descriptions of basalt and alabaster, a deep green so rich with pigment that it might be mistaken for black. L'chaim.

4. I'll tell you something I like about you
I've not mentioned it thus far, but I admire your sartorial taste. The cut of your clothing, the details of your collar and cuffs, the spats of fine wool buttoned securely over your trousers and shoes - all are elegant and gentlemanly, reminding me of the best of fashion among the men about me when we lived well before the war.

5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you
When I think of you I see you across your workroom, turning to me from a table in the firelight. I see you surprised but smiling, and the feeling within me is of warmth and anticipation overcoming my small hesitancy at interrupting you. My first memory of you is... I read your accounts, both dark and profound, before speaking to you. I cannot recall which one inspired me to greet you.

6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of
a snow monkey - it is the most nearly-human animal of which I have heard, and the one most given to solitary intellectual pursuits.

7. I'll ask you something I've always wanted to ask you
I would ask again, for I am persistent, though I hope not disconcertingly so: What may I offer that I might earn your company that we might come to know one another?

1. I looked at your interests just now, for I had difficulty considering randomness. Out of the block of interests (my eyes are not focusing properly as I am ill) one stood out in bold right in the centre. Mercy. It is the interest we have listed in common. And as a random quality it is fine and telling. As a subject for contemplation it is even more intriguing, relating to forgiveness and generosity of spirit and kindness. Wonderful. You are merciful.
2. I should like to see you drawing. I do not know if you draw or practice drawing, but I should like to see what you would produce - even the subjects you chose.
3. I made you the lion icon, with the snowflake. I think the colour I associate most with you is the colour of the border. It is a fire colour and a fall one, from when the leaves transformed.
4. I value meaning most highly, and you always respond with depth and honesty. You respond to my posts and thoughts and turning ideas with you own generously and often. It is a gift to us, and I should like to say that we appreciate mightily that you not only read (which would be appreciated on its own) but also consider and add. Ideas cannot progress in isolation, and in showing me more of yourself as you comment and compare what I have to your own truth, the universe expands for John as well as I. And we would like to take this opportunity to thank you.
5. My first memory of you is talking to you at the Solstice party at the treehouse - talking about being a priest and the nobility I saw in priesthood and about your life in Fort St. John. We played games and drank as well. I knew scarcely anyone there and it was wonderful to talk with such depth to someone who was at that time a complete stranger. I believe you met us both that night - John and I - though I cannot remember for certain. It was warm and a pleasure.
6. Would it be foolish to say a lion? I will try to think of another animal. Perhaps... once I saw a starfish. It is the smartest and fastest traveling starfish in the world, round with many many arms, not just five, about a foot and a half across - golden, orange and cream. It crawled towards me and over my foot and carried on its way. Amazing.
7. I hope this is not cheek, but... I really loved your lime squares. They were tangy and refreshing, chewy and delicious. And if you had the recipe... *grins hopefully*

1. I had no idea I was merciful. You are the second person to describe me as such.
2. I sketch from time to time and I can draw if subjects are present. I'm rusty though and it's been a while since I put pen (or brush-pen) to paper. I did draw my icon here, but that was a quick silly set of brush-strokes.
3. Yes and I thank you. Fire and fall-into-Winter are all things I associate strongly with :)
4. you're very welcome - and I thank you for the same. In deep conversation, knowledge grows and can be synthesized beyond what is immediately present, opening up new possibilities...
5. It was a wonderful night and I remember it fondly, if not in detail. It was a good meeting and very clearly (to me) the meeting with you as a new and good friend.
6. *grin*. Starfish of the deep? a traveller near and far... we'll see :)
7. I -will- post the recipe and soon. I've just had to digest some changes first. It's actually quite simple. I'll of course include my own modifications :)
(it's basically the "Lemon Square" from the Tashajarah Bread Book, substituting lime for lemon and rye flour for crumbs/other).

1. You have a nice smile. While it is fortunately not rare, at least in my experience, it exist with knowledge and experience behind it, making it rich, genuine and valuable. There is something wistful there, but with long time there is much to miss, even while welcoming the present. And your perspective colours everything.
2. Build something, even something small, of stone. It will last and exist always - an artifact of yourself and a memorial to whatever memory and quality of whatever you value inherent to it for any who come across it in the vastness of time.
3. When choosing the colours for friends here I gave you a background of olive green and a foreground of silver, which is my own favourite. I am not sure of the reasons, but I still see you as this shade of green. it is not military green, nor yet a green of forests or meadows. Perhaps moss, though there is no poetic reason.
4. Your demeanour speaks of reliability. Though you have doubts and sorrows, these are only elements of your supreme dependability. You are one of such as hold the world safe from the vagaries and more random strivings given by such as I. You are a commander, but not all commanders have this quality, and you are a man under who others ought to be proud to serve, and a man whom they can feel they can trust to lead them, for the best you know, which is considerable.
5. My first memory of you is of course at the Vintage muses club. You were calm, gently humourous, and kind enough to allow us to experiment with the samples of your remarkable and futuristic alcohol. It was a warm occasion of adults having a civilised occasion that was yet far from sedate. I liked you at once.
6. Walrus. This is not meant as negative in any way. I see you as a seafarer, which is surely what you would have been in my time. But you are too strong to be any fish, too agile to be a whale, too complex to be a seal, too collected to be an otter. Therefor: a walrus, which stands erect and dignified and gives the sense of wearing a fine moustache, which I realise you do not wear either, but which you do have a sense also of possessing.
7. You are caring - successfully - for Paul. I tried, and wept for him. I did not try to be close in the same way, but only with words and ideas. What quality do you possess that he would allow you to offer him what peace you may?
8. If I do this for you, you must post this on yours.
