When one has sufficient time, there is opportunity for understanding.
In an emergency - act first, resolve later. One of the old rules of chivalry that I learnt back when I was a child was that another's life is always more important to defend - as one can defend oneself. Always defend oneself of course, but such should be a natural extension of defending others as well.
I think the only reason the madness never claimed me was that most important faith - the one that says people (including myself) are always worth the chance.
