readings for John's birthday
11:20:00, August 14th, 2007

John Henry Holliday, DDS
Do not wonder, brethren, that the world hates you.
We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death.
Any one who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
But if any one has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?
Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth.
I John 3, 13-18

I kept my faith, even when I said, "I am greatly afflicted";
I said in my consternation, "Men are all a vain hope."
What shall I render to the LORD for all his bounty to me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD,
O LORD, I am thy servant, the son of thy handmaid. Thou hast loosed my bonds.
I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the LORD.
Psalm 116, 10-13, 16-17

"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
This I command you, to love one another.
John 15, 12-17

Theodore 'Hickey' Hickman: Scratch neck
We-ell, happy birthday to you, Doc!

That's quite the collection you've got, too. Can't say that I take much out of the Bible--not for what you'd call honest purposes, anyway--but you've got some good ones, there. Worth another look.

You're a good guy, Doc, and I really would like you to have a helluva day. You just let me know if there's anything I can do.

John beams. I know not everyone is religious, and some of those I love best have not been. Those were the readings for this my birthday. http://www.ewtn.com/devotionals/inspiration.htm#14 Had I had opportunity to select them I could not have done better.

Perhaps you would like some pecan pie with peach sauce, and a lemonade? I shall be offering it around later, but as you are first I would be very pleased if I could offer you something.

it really is John's birthday and we have genuinely thus taken the day off (first since April.) genuine toasts and cameraderie will be ours later. I wish we could offer genuine pie and whiskey to those here. welcome back. your other journal is, again, fantastic. we are very avid readers.

John Henry Holliday, DDS: a gift from Ynez
"Gracias, Ynez querida." John tries to answer her in her language. His adoptive brother was Mexican, but John is less than sure of his words. He gives her a warm hug with a sunny smile, then offers a big glass of ice and lemonade and a big piece of pecan pie with peach caramel sauce. "I made it myself, this time!"

Ynez Castillo: thrilled
Ynez kisses his cheek and looks at him carefully, trying to determine exactly how healthy he is today.

"You'll make me fat, John. Thank you!"

The pie is delicious.

John beams at Gabriel and wraps him in a shortly-after-birthday hug. "It is my favourite too. I think about it a great deal, you know, and to have it come up for my birthday! It is like an extra-special present."

John Henry Holliday, DDS: soapy!
He is so excited by this in fact, he nearly forgets, but quickly recovers himself and hands Gabriel a lemonade (with a cherry on top) and an enourmous plate of pie and sticky peach candy-sauce.

Aw, man. I'm sorry I'm late. Guess I missed out on the pie and lemonade, huh?

I don't know you that well, but you seem like a pretty cool dude. Just thought I'd stop by and say happy (belated) birthday.

John beams at Anson, even though it is not quite his birthday any longer. He agreeably passes over a huge glass of lemonade (with real ice!) and a big plate of pecan pie, with a sauce of peach and caramel. "There is surely plenty here. Thank you very kindly for your kind greeting!"

I am sorry about that. I was logged in as the wrong muse.

Anson Greene: CJ/Anson 1
"All right!" Anson grins and takes a huge bite of pie. "Hey, this is pretty good. Thanks, man." He samples the lemonade and finds it delicious as well. He nods his approval at John, then suddenly his eyes widen. "Almost forgot!" He puts his plate and glass down and reaches inside his jacket, giving John a mischievious smile. "Brought you a little something to mark the big day." After a moment, his hand emerges, wrapped around a bottle of excellent whiskey. He presents it to John with a flourish. "Happy birthday, Mister...ah, Doc."

"Why thank you, Anson! How very thoughtful!"

He beams and opens the whiskey, placing a glass near Anson's hand. He also serves him up an additional quantity of peach caramel. He leans over confidentially. "I put a considerable amount of whiskey in the sauce. Not as good as this, of course, but surely whiskey."

Anson's grin gets brighter still as more of the delicious sauce is ladled over his slice of pie. Ah, the man knows the way to his heart. The peach caramel sauce satisfies Anson's sweet tooth, while the marvelously smooth whiskey makes a pleasant warm glow in his belly. He helps himself to another forkful of pie. "Now you're talkin'," he says with a conspiratorial smile. "A little whiskey makes just about everything better."
